Request Contact Info Button

We've added a new button type to your WhatsApp templates: you can now ask a customer for their phone number with a single tap.

`**What it does**`

When someone messages you using their WhatsApp username, their phone number isn't shared with you. You can chat with them, but you can't save the number to your CRM, call them, or send them an SMS.

You can now add a Request Contact Info button to your template and ask the customer for the number directly. When they tap the button and confirm, their number appears in the chat and reaches you.

The number is only shared if the customer agrees, and they see it as a message they sent themselves — so what reaches you is a verified number, given with explicit consent.

Because it's sent as a template, you can use it outside the 24-hour reply window too; the customer doesn't need to have messaged you first.

**How to use it**

  1. Go to Create Template
  2. Choose Marketing or Utility as the category
  3. Write your message text
  4. Add Button → Request Contact Info
  5. Submit the template and wait for Meta's approval

You don't need to write the button's label. WhatsApp writes it and translates it into your customer's phone language — a customer using English sees "Share contact info". You can see the final look in the preview.

**What to know**

These are WhatsApp's rules; the panel keeps you from building an invalid template in the first place.

  • Available in the Marketing and Utility categories only
  • A template can contain at most one of these buttons
  • It must be the only button on the template; no other button can sit alongside it
  • The template can't have a header or footer — just the message text and the button
  • Not available in Media Card Carousel or Limited Time Offer templates
  • The customer may choose not to tap the button; that's a normal outcome and no error occurs

`**How the number reaches you**`

When the customer shares their details, a notification is sent to your webhook address. It also tells you whether the number came from the button or from the customer manually sharing a contact card in the chat — so you can save only the customer's own number and avoid processing someone else's card as theirs.

**Test it before going live**

From the Sandbox section you can send your template to your own test number and see how the button really looks.

The Webhook Simulator now includes a ready-made "Contact shared (contact request)" sample, so you can test your own integration without waiting for a real customer. The sample produces exactly the notification WhatsApp will send.
